Pet Bird Care And Safety

We all know that birds have a longer lifespan than humans. That's why they're such great pets. However, pet bird care should always be taken into consideration because the bird family of animals is one of the most sensitive of its kind -- so sensitive that miners bring them underground to make sure the air they're breathing is safe.

Birds thrive where air can flow through easily. Teflon pans, chemical sprays with aerosol and strong-smelling polish for furniture can kill pet birds.

Pet bird care includes keeping the bird in an environment free from harmful things that it may chew on. Metal items may result to the bird getting lead poisoning. If they nibble on plants around the house, they may get poisoned as well. The only safe plants so far are poinsettia potted plants. You could also place parsley plants around the house to serve as an alternative to fertilized potted plants.

Fresh food that are eaten by humans can also be eaten by birds. However, in knowing pet bird care, keep in mind that you can give them anything fresh except for chocolate, avocado or coffee.

Now that it's the Christmas season, you may be putting up a nice tree in your home. Before you do, make sure that there are no preservatives or chemicals on your tree because your pet bird may fly around it and get poisoned as easily as that. Some ornaments and Christmas lights are also hazardous to your pet bird's health, so keep these pet bird care tips in mind before going out and buying your decor.

Naturally, birds will always have the urge to fly -- that is, unless they have clipped wings. If your pet bird doesn't have clipped wings, you should put curtains or blinds on your windows or put safety decals so that your pet bird will not fly out the window or fly right to the glass window and break its neck. The same goes with other parts of the house that are made of glass.

Birds drown easily as well, so make sure you don't leave any pots or tubs of stagnant water lying around -- not even the kitchen sink. Don't cook with open pots of boiling water as well. One drop inside and it won't take long before your beloved pet bird may drown or burn.

Lastly, always be aware when you are carrying your pet bird with you. Even with clipped wings, a slight gush of wind from opening the door can send your bird flying out. Remember that the bird has a long lifespan but it does have many dangers posed on its life so make sure that you are aware of pet bird care to give your pet a great life with you and your loved ones.
